Is there any doubt that Mark Knopfler is one of THE best guitarists and songwriters of his generation? I have followed his career since hearing "Sultans of Swing" playing on the radio when I was in high school and realized that here was a very special musician indeed. And while Knopfler's musical style has shifted across years and albums, his trademark guitar work is instantly recognizable. While I liked Privateering (Knopfler's previous solo album), "Tracker" is a much stronger album with songs and guitar work that are more memorable and melodic. The lyrics are quintessential Knopfler, who is capable of telling a compelling story about just about anything. In "River Towns," for example, he wanders into Springsteen territory (the song even features a nice sax solo) with its tale of a man seeking comfort with a bottle and a prostitute when he finds himself alone over the holidays, "When I asked her if she'd like to stay, she was down my stairs so quick..so I get the bottle open, but something's hit a nerve, and I'm looking in the mirror at the face that I deserve."There's a range of styles represented in the songs on this album, but they're all good--darned good. I found myself drawn particularly to "Long Cool Girl," a sweet gentle song that will have you humming long after the album's over. "Terminal of Tribute To" is the most rock-centric of the batch and most likely to please the Dire Straits fans. The duet with Ruth Moody channels his work with Emmylou Harris. If faced with the impossible task of rank-ordering Knopfler's discography in terms of quality, I'd put "Sailing to Philadelphia," "Shangri-La," and "Tracker" in the top 3 slots, but danged if I could decide in what order. "Tracker" is an outstanding album. Buy it.
